Glossary

Edging – the process of painting the sides of surfaces which tends to be quite sensitive especially if the adjacent wall has a different color or shade.

Paint roller – painting implement that is used in conjunction with a painting tray that can be easier to use on wide flat surfaces. They can come in sizes ranging from 9” down to 2” for special applications. There are also textured rollers that have different designs and textures built in to the appliance that gives a different look to the applied paint. They tend to be easier but also messier and they are harder to clean making them disposable in most cases. They come in many grades from smooth to thick ones all having distinct influences on the finished surface.

Solvent-based – paints that may use a wide variety of chemical solvents such as lacquer, turpentine, oil, thinner and many more similar chemically or naturally based solvents.

Tacky rags – are rags that have been impregnated with sticky resin that allows them to pick-up dust particles that makes painting easier. Dust adheres to curing paint and can be difficult to remove.

Water-based – paints that use water as solvent. Generally used for concrete, stone and many other similar products.
